Frequently Asked Questions

Q:

What’s the program all about?

A:

Precision Nutrition Coaching is a 12-month body transformation program that guides you through important—yet sustainable—changes in your eating and lifestyle with help from an expert coach.

To date, we’ve tested it with over 100,000 clients, who’ve transformed their bodies and health in amazing ways.

If you’ve tried something before and “failed”—or just can’t stick with it—know that you’re not alone. And it’s not your fault.

After all, self-directed training and nutrition programs fail 98 percent of the time. Not to mention, after many years in the fitness industry, we’ve seen dozens of diet and exercise fads come and go.

That’s why we don’t follow fads. Instead, we teach you doable daily actions that are designed to fit into a busy lifestyle.

We help you bring health and fitness into your life in a way that works for your life and your body.

Bottom line: Precision Nutrition Coaching enables you to make fitness and nutrition a part of your life—without it taking over.

Our program is designed to work on your absolute worst days, not just your best days.

As a result, our clients get results like this:

Q:

What does the program include?

A:

Precision Nutrition Coaching includes:

  • A structured year-long nutrition program to help keep you consistent.
  • An expert coach to give you feedback, make adjustments, and help keep you accountable.
  • Strategic daily nutrition practices that fit into your lifestyle.
  • Expert-designed (yet optional) exercise programs, customized to your skill level, goals, and time available.
  • $250,000 in prize money. We stack the deck in your favor and give you something positive to shoot for.
  • Guaranteed results. Stick with us for a year, and if you don’t get what you’re looking for, you get a full refund.

Q:

How often do you accept new clients?

A:

We only accept new clients twice per year—and millions of people visit our website during those registration periods. That means we only have the capacity to coach less than 1 percent of the people who express interest in working with us.

Because of that, our programs have historically sold out in a matter of hours. That’s why we encourage people to put their name on the Precision Nutrition Coaching presale list.

By adding your name to that list, we’ll give you the opportunity to register 24 hours before everyone else, increasing your chances of getting a spot.

Plus, you’ll save up to 54% off the cost of the program. It’s our way of rewarding the people who are most willing to commit, because they’ve always proven to be our best clients.

Q:

Who is Precision Nutrition Coaching for?

A:

Precision Nutrition Coaching is for women and men who want to get healthier, fitter, and stronger—and stay that way for the rest of their lives.

It’s for people who want to…

  • lose weight and body fat
  • build physical strength and confidence
  • get results that last
  • and get off the diet rollercoaster once and for all.

Plus, the program is designed for people with busy schedules.

We work closely with our clients to help them eat well and exercise, no matter what other craziness is going on in their lives.

We provide you with personal accountability, a structured nutritional program to follow, and a coach to help keep you consistent and on-track.

We don’t give you a crazy diet or exercise program to follow; instead, we help you build habits that will get you results that last forever.

Q:

Who is Precision Nutrition Coaching NOT for?

A:

Precision Nutrition Coaching is not for figure or fitness models, professional bodybuilders, or high-level athletes training for a particular sport.

It’s also not for people who already have all the accountability they need.

If you rarely struggle with staying consistent with your exercise or eating habits, then we’re not a good choice for you.

Q:

Will Precision Nutrition Coaching work for me?

A:

Want to lose weight? Eat better? Feel less stressed? Get more sleep?

If you follow our recommendations and stick with us for the full year then yes, you will get results.

If you participate in Precision Nutrition Coaching, do at least 80 percent of what we ask you to do, you’ll end up leaner, stronger, healthier, and happier with your body than you ever thought possible.

You don’t have to get it perfect. But you have to commit to making small, strategic changes in your life.

That’s something no one ever likes to admit about getting in better shape: It takes hard work, time, and determination.

Changing your body isn’t easy, but it is possible. For 15 years we’ve helped thousands of people do all that and more. No other company has that track record, and we’re confident we can help you, too.

Once you make the commitment to get in better shape, we’ll be with you every step of the way. When life pushes you around and difficulties come up, we’ll help you push back.

We’ll stack the deck in your favor and give you every advantage we know of. Over the course of 12 months, you’ll learn everything you need to look, feel, and perform at your best.

That’s our promise.

Q:

Do you really guarantee results?

A:

Absolutely. We guarantee our work—100%—because it’s the right thing to do.

We’ve helped over 100,000 clients people improve their nutrition, bodies, and health over the past 15 years; that makes us the world’s most experienced nutrition coaching team.

Stick with us for a year and follow our recommendations. If you don’t get what you’re looking for at the end of the year, we’ll give you a full refund.

Seriously. Every penny. You get to decide if the program was worth it.

Why do we do this? Because we stand behind our work. We know you’ll walk out healthier and happier than ever before.

Bonus: If you do really well, you could even win a bunch of cash at the end too.

Q:

Who are you and what makes you qualified to coach?

A:

I’m John Berardi, Ph.D., co-founder of Precision Nutrition.

I’ve devoted my entire career to making health and fitness something that’s achievable and attainable for every type of person, from every walk of life. (Here’s a bit more about me, if you’re interested.)

At Precision Nutrition, we have a world-class coaching team made up of doctors, exercise specialists, naturopaths, nutritionists and counselors.

We’ve coached and mentored people in nearly 100 countries through our research programs, professional education courses, and personal coaching groups.

Fast Company magazine recently picked Precision Nutrition as one of the Most Innovative Companies in fitness.

Who comes to Precision Nutrition for help?

Thousands of people from all over the world. Companies like Nike and Apple. Professional sports teams like the San Antonio Spurs and dozens of Olympic athletes and their coaches.

Lots of people consider us the world’s leading experts in nutrition coaching. That’s a big responsibility, and we don’t take it lightly.

Precision Nutrition has been featured in dozens of media outlets…

…and has consulted with some of the world’s most innovative companies and teams.

Q:

What will I learn in the Precision Nutrition Coaching program?

A:

If you’re wondering what we have in store for you, you can download the men’s and women’s curriculum outlines here:

Q:

Do you give me a meal plan?

A:

No, we don’t give out meal plans.

Meal plans and diets aren’t really that useful or sustainable. People often feel like they’re either “on” them or “off” them. They feel like they’ve failed and are beyond hope if they’re not eating perfectly at every meal.

Our approach is completely different: We help you build a set of sustainable habits that will serve you for the rest of your life.

This means you get to choose—with the help of your coach—which foods are best for you, when to eat those foods, and how much to eat of them.

Q:

Can I see a demo of how the program works?

A:

Sure can. This first demo details exactly what you can expect from Precision Nutrition Coaching for Men.

Q:

Why are you offering this type of coaching?

A:

Mentors and coaches have made all the difference in my life. And that’s why I developed the Precision Nutrition Coaching program.

At Precision Nutrition, most of us feel extremely fortunate to have access to mentors and coaches. People who are a little further along the path than we are. People who can help steer us in the direction we need to go.

That’s why we’ve made it our mission to pay it forward. We’re here to help you make meaningful change in your life.

Q:

Why coaching? Can't I just pick up a diet book? Or read some online articles for free?

A:

If you take an honest look at your life—and at the lives of the people you most respect and admire—you’ll notice something interesting.

As human beings, we’re rarely ever transformed by reading more books or articles. Or from watching a documentary. Or from taking a class.

Instead, most transformative change happens through a real relationship with another human being—usually a coach or a mentor.

Sure, you can try another diet book or read a few more articles, especially if you love thinking about exercise and nutrition. If you get great results with those tools, we applaud you.

But if you’re having trouble putting what you know into action, Precision Nutrition Coaching might be for you.

Q:

Do you really hate books and blogs?

A:

I actually get this question a lot. And the answer is no: I don’t hate book or blogs. In fact, I love books. I’ve even written a couple.

But diet and fitness books rarely help us make dramatic, consistent changes in our lives.

Books typically present too much new information at once. They get you all fired up about a “new” way of doing things… which lasts for a few days. Then you’re back to where you were before.

Of course, while most of us think we need to learn everything at once, research shows the exact opposite: When we want to improve ourselves, the only way to do it is to change one thing at a time.

That’s why coaching (being led and guided by someone a little further along the path than you) and social support (being surrounded and encouraged by like-minded people) are so important.

The formula is simple: We deliver coaching, social support, and a process that encourages real change.

And that’s not something you can find in a book.

Q:

I'm a beginner with a lot of weight to lose. Will this work for me?

A:

Yes. We’ve worked with lots of people who are new to exercise and healthy eating.

Remember, we were all beginners at some point. And at Precision Nutrition, we do our best to make sure all beginners work at a pace that’s comfortable for them.

To see for yourself how diverse our clients are, click here to see the men and here for the women that we’ve worked with.

Q:

I'm NOT a beginner. Will Precision Nutrition work for me?

A:

Lots of our clients have 5+ years of experience with consistent training and healthy eating. And they still get great results with us. That’s because the interactions they have with their Precision Nutrition coach are tailored to their needs and goals—it’s not a “one size fits all” program.

Oftentimes, people with a lot of experience enjoy handing the reins over to us for a while. We take care of the nutrition and exercise programming so they can focus on improving other parts of their lives.

We’ve even helped hundreds of personal trainers get back in shape. Like Toni. Or Ron.

Q:

What if I don't have much weight to lose but just want to eat better?

A:

It’s great that you don’t have a lot of weight to lose. It means you’re starting out with a big advantage.

Of course, lifelong fitness and health is more than losing weight. With Precision Nutrition Coaching you’ll learn how to maintain a healthy (and lean) body for life.

You’ll discover how it feels to be more physically capable, more confident, and stronger—inside, and out.

Plus you’ll develop a new, healthier relationship to food and eating. And that’s something fewer than 5 percent of people know how to do.

Q:

I'm interested in building muscle. Is this for me?

A:

Yes. We have custom exercise programming and nutrition habits specifically for people who want to gain muscle. Plus your coach will work with you to help you achieve specific body composition goals.

Q:

I'm thinking of joining with a friend or partner. Can we do the program together?

Q:

Is this just for young people?

A:

Absolutely not. We coach men and women of all ages. We’ve had many winners and finalists who are in their 50s, 60s, and 70s.

To see for yourself how diverse our clients are, click here to see the men and here for the women that we’ve worked with.

Q:

I work in the fitness industry. Should I do this or the Precision Nutrition Certification instead?

A:

The answer depends on a few things.

Want to become a better fitness professional? Then consider doing the Precision Nutrition Certification first. Then, once you’ve graduated from that program, you can consider joining us here.

By first learning the theory (i.e. Certification), and then seeing that theory in action (i.e. Coaching), you’ll get a much richer experience and really see how we tie the two together.

Want to get in better shape yourself? Then consider doing coaching first. You can get started on the Precision Nutrition Certification after you go through the coaching program yourself. This way you’ll get the main benefit you’re after (fitness) while also learning about our applied system. You can go back and learn the theory later.

Check out Toni and Ron’s stories for more information about how Precision Nutrition Coaching can help fitness professionals.

Q:

What's with the $250,000 in prize money?

A:

From what I can tell, most people just get lectured all the time about how they look or about how they’ll be stricken by all kinds of terrible diseases and die if they don’t start to eat better.

That kind of hysterical negativity doesn’t motivate most people, regardless of the goal; it just comes off as condescending, annoying and overwhelming.

In our experience, big, inspiring goals are much easier to achieve when something big is at stake.

So that’s why we put up real cash prizes for our clients and give away $250,000—a quarter of a million dollars—every year.

Every single client who participates in Precision Nutrition Coaching—regardless of where they live or what their goals are—is eligible for one of our big prizes.

Rachel lost 31 pounds in PN Coaching; we surprised her with $25,000.

Javier lost 60 pounds in PN Coaching; we surprised him with $25,000.

Precision Nutrition Women's Coaching - Jill

Jill lost 55 pounds in PN Coaching; we surprised her with $25,000.

Precision Nutrition Men's Coaching - Andrew

Andrew lost 51 pounds in PN Coaching; we surprised him with $25,000.

Q:

What if I don't win any money?

A:

Precision Nutrition Coaching is designed to make the process of getting in better shape easier and more effective than ever before. So there are only three things you need to know right off the bat:

1. If it doesn’t work, it’s free.

Make a commitment and stick with us for a year. If you don’t get the results you’re looking for after those 12 months, we’ll give your money back. All of it. Every penny. You get to decide if it was worth it. Why do we do this? Because we stand behind our work. And we’re very confident you’ll end up looking and feeling better than ever before.

2. If you work hard and do a good job, you get in the best shape of your life.

Follow our advice, and you will get the body you’re after, plain and simple. That’s what people are looking for: something that truly works. And that’s what we deliver. You walk out in the best shape of your life.

3. And if you do a great job, you get in the best shape of your life AND you can win serious money.

Bonus: If you really kick butt in this, you might even win a bunch of cash at the end too. Which, for example, you could arrange in a big pile in your backyard and swim in it with your newly-fit body. Or you could take a stack of bills from your winnings, and flip through them ever so slowly, letting the sound of Benjamin Franklin lull you to sleep at night.

In the end, even if you don’t end up with prize money, you will end up healthier and fitter than ever before.

And that’s worth the weight you’ll lose in gold.

Q:

I read that you require progress photos. Do I have to submit those?

A:

Well, technically, we don’t require progress photos. They’re completely optional.

The reason we request progress photos is to visually document the changes you’re making while coaching with us.

It’s also important for your coach to see what’s happening so they can help give you better advice when required.

At the end of your coaching experience, if you’re really proud of your transformation and want to be featured as a finalist, we’ll ask for your permission to do so.

But, before that, the pictures will be kept totally private at all times.

Remember, we’re here to help people change their bodies and their lives. Not to embarrass anyone or make them feel ashamed. So you can opt out of the photo process if you want to.

Nonetheless, we really do encourage you to stretch yourself, get out of your comfort zone, and give this method a try.

Q:

How much does it cost?

A:

The exclusive presale price: Choose from a one-time payment of $997 USD, or $97 USD per month for 12 months.

This is the lowest price we’ve ever offered!

Note: This discount is only for people on the presale list; the general public pays either $1799 USD up front, or $179 USD per month for 12 months.

We offer this discount to people who sign up for the presale list for one reason: the people who are most eager and willing to take action are usually our best clients. That’s why we reward them with a discount and a chance to register a full 24 hours before everyone else.

Not on the presale list yet? Add your name here.

Q:

Will I have to spend a lot of money on food and supplements?

A:

When it comes to food, most clients actually end up saving money on their grocery bills.

This is because they make more informed, careful decisions, eat out less, and spend fewer dollars on processed novelty foods, replacing them with whole, delicious natural foods.

As for supplements, we may recommend a few health-oriented products, based on your unique needs and goals. However, these are completely optional.

Q:

Will I need to join a gym?

A:

Nope, you don’t have to join a gym to be successful with Precision Nutrition Coaching.

All the exercise programs can be performed at a gym or at home.

Q:

I like to... (Crossfit, run, bike, swim, ski, do group exercise classes, walk my dog, etc). Can I still do the stuff I love while getting coaching?

A:

Of course. Keep doing what you love.

That’s the whole point of Precision Nutrition Coaching—to learn how to eat and exercise in a way that works for you.

Health and fitness should be fun, freeing and sustainable. It’s about helping you live a fuller life. So yes, if anything, the program will help you do more of the things you love.

Once you get started, your coach will work with you to structure things in a way that works for your lifestyle.

Q:

I already have a personal trainer. Can I keep that up while getting coaching with Precision Nutrition?

A:

Yes, if you want to continue with both, that’ll work.

In fact, I think with Precision Nutrition Coaching AND your in-person coach, you’ll be unstoppable.

Once you sign up, just let your coach know that you’re working with a local trainer and we’ll make sure to integrate the two.

Q:

I have a few injuries. Can I still join?

A:

Yes.

We all go through injuries, so I understand where you’re coming from. In fact, here’s my own personal story with injury.

With Precision Nutrition Coaching, we can tailor certain exercises to help fit your needs.

Once you’ve signed up, you’ll simply work with your coach to find some easy and effective alternatives.

Q:

I follow a special diet (plant-based, vegan, Paleo, intermittent fasting). Will you still work with me?

A:

Yep, we’d love to work with you. The nutrition habits your coach will guide you through are easily customizable.

All you have to do is let your coach know what your dietary preferences/restrictions are and they’ll help you out.

Q:

When does the Precision Nutrition Coaching program begin?

A:

We open registration on Wednesday, January 9th. And there won’t be another one until July 2019.

To get an early bird chance at registration, we strongly recommend that you sign up for the presale list.

Q:

How long does the program run for?

A:

Precision Nutrition Coaching lasts for 12 months. Based on our continued research, we’ve found a full year to be the most effective time period for building the habits necessary for lifelong health and fitness.

Our coaching team is committed to helping you make a life-changing transformation. That’s why we have everyone commit to the program for 12 months.

Q:

Do you really sell out every time you open?

A:

Yes.

Since we only open our coaching program twice per year—and since we can only accept less than 1 percent of people who express interest in working with us—we tend to sell out in a matter of hours.

A couple years ago we weren’t totally prepared for how quickly it would happen. Back then, Precision Nutrition Coaching was called “Lean Eating”. And we literally had our website crash due to the overwhelming amount of people trying to get in at once.

Precision Nutrition

This is a note from a couple years ago. We sold out in 30 minutes and had our website crash from the traffic.

Nowadays we continue to have a lot of people visit our website… and we continue to accept a limited amount of clients.

The only difference is that we now prepare our computer servers to deal with the sudden rush of people trying to get a spot. (We learned that the hard way.)

Q:

How do I increase my chances of getting a spot?

A:

To get an early bird chance at registration, we strongly recommend that you sign up for the presale list.

We’ll send you a special link 24 hours before the general public, increasing your chances of getting a spot.

Q:

What are other people saying about Precision Nutrition Coaching?

A:

The feedback on the coaching has been overwhelmingly positive.

Investor rush to alternative meats and healthy eating accelerates the disruption of food systems - ImpactAlpha

Posted by [email protected] on Comments comments (0)

Impactalpha, April 1 – One thing missing from the new “Questlove cheesesteak” at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia: steak, at least the kind that comes from animals.

Hip-hop artist and Philly native Questlove turned to Impossible Meat 2.0 for his version of the signature Philadelphia sandwich. Impossible Foods, which has offered plant-engineered hamburgers, is rolling out its first steak-like product.

What signals mainstream arrival of food innovation more than opening day at the ballpark?

As the huge carbon footprint of modern beef production becomes clear, the roster of companies with credible, sustainable alternatives have raised large rounds of venture capital. Health-conscious consumers have made local, organically-grown, and natural the fastest growing categories in the U.S. Big food and agriculture companies, initially slow to the market shift, are moving to catch up.

“Capital markets have woken up to the food and agriculture opportunity,” says Walter Robb, who left as co-CEO of Whole Foods two years ago. “This is nothing short of a revolution in the food industry.”

Robb shifted from sustainable food distributor to sustainable food investor after Amazon’s 2017 acquisition of Whole Foods. Robb has backed, with both time and capital, a handful of young companies tackling waste, and local, healthy food markets. Last year he became an executive-in-residence S2G Ventures (for seed-togrowth), one of last year’s most active food and agtech investors.

“We’re at an Inflection point for shaping what next generation of food and food options will be,” Robb told ImpactAlpha.

Sustainable food

Innovation in food and ag has lagged that of other industries. It’s now accelerating. Venture capital investment in the sector was up last year by 40% to $17 billion. That’s a six-fold increase since 2012 for startups solving food waste, carbon emissions, labor shortages, health and sugar consumption, opaque supply chains and distribution inefficiencies, food safety and traceability, farm efficiency and profitability, and unsustainable meat production, according to AgFunder.

>> Join the conversation. ImpactAlpha’s Dennis Price will interview former Whole Foods co-CEO Walter Robb at an evening event hosted by the Social Innovation Initiative at the McCombs School of Business at the University of Texas at Austin this Wednesday, April 3. Register now.

The leading producers of plant-based foods and alternative proteins are raising ever-larger rounds. Impossible Foods alone has raised about $400 million in total venture capital since 2016. Among the company’s investors are Singapore-based Temasek, Bill Gates and Questlove.

Beyond Meat, an Impossible Foods competitor, filed for an initial public offering to raise $100 million last fall. The firm has developed a presence in supermarkets, including Whole Foods, and has raised more than $100 million from celebrities like Gates and Leonardo DiCaprio, McDonald’s former CEO, and mainstream meat companies like Tyson Foods. Obvious Ventures owns a 10% stake. S2G invested in 2014.

Billionaire syndicate Breakthrough Energy Ventures backed the $90 milllion Series A of alternative ingredients company Motif Ingredients, which will use biotechnology and fermentation to “engineer dozens of proteins derived from dairy, egg and meat.” The first investment from Craftory, a new $300 million London family office, was in Chilean startup NotCo, which uses artificial intelligence and human tasters to develop plant-based mayonnaise, milk, ice cream, meat and other products.

The investment imperative of sustainable food

Innovation is being rewarded across the food value chain. In February, Equilibrium Capital invested more than $100 million to grow greenhouse food production in three large-scale greenhouse operations in California, Utah, and Minnesota (Equilibrium just closed a greenhouse food fund at $336 million).

Healthy fast-casual chain Sweetgreen raised $200 million in November. Also last year, Bain Capital’s Double Impact Fund backed two healthy, sustainable restaurant ventures in one week, Portland-based Sustainable Restaurant Group and vegan restaurant chain by CHLOE.

“We’re firm believers that Americans will eat healthier, more sustainable food in the future than they do today,” Warren Valdmanis told ImpactAlpha at the time. The Double Impact team, he said, “has spent significant time analyzing the potential of the sector in order to be [at the forefront] of what we believe will be an impactful trend.”

Last year, French food multinational Danone became the world’s largest company with the B Corp, a certification given by nonprofit B Lab for meeting standards of social and environmental performance. More than a dozen large food companies, such as Campbell Soup Company, Cargill and Land-O-Lakes, have launched corporate venture funds. Others, like Kraft Heintz, seem to have missed the trend altogether.

Financing local food

Tideline’s Amy Bell says investments in the food system have huge opportunities for outsized impact. They can have “a positive impact on health and nutrition, and the economic livelihoods of farmers, but also have an environmental impact,” she says. Reducing food waste and shifting to a plant-rich diet, for example, are two of the top five carbon-reducing solutions on the Project Drawdown list of solutions to reverse global warming.

Bell is an advisor to Austin-based angel investor network Foodshed Investors. The group has deployed about $2.5 million in deals to 26 companies, more than three-quarters through debt, in an effort to increase the supply of high quality, local food accessible to all. Foodshed Investors has backed The Cook’s Nook, for example, a culinary incubator for Austin-area artisans, mobile food vendors and meal services. It’s also financed Lick Honest Ice Creams, an Austin ice creamery that sources local and sustainable ingredients.

To meet local demand for healthy, local food – and increase access to it – there’s a need for more facilities that underpin local food production and distribution, says Bell. More retail stores, reimagined bodegas, mobile food stations, regional-sized processors and distributors.

Such local businesses need more debt capital. Foodshed Investors, for example, has provided traditional debt, as well as debt with revenue-linked royalties and a farmer-specific bridge loan, for most of its investments. The production side of the food value chain needs working capital, she says. “It’s a gap in the market.”

Other local food efforts in the U.S. include the Michigan Good Food Fund, a $30 million local fund backed by Capital Impact Partners, Fair Food Network, Michigan State University Center for Regional Food Systems, and the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. Since 2015 the fund has deployed about $11 million in more than two dozen Michigan food businesses that benefit underserved communities.

The federally backed Healthy Food Financing Initiative, managed by Reinvestment Fund, has leveraged more than $220 million in grants since 2010 into $1 billion in private financing to help more than 1000 food retailers expand into so-called food deserts.

Venture firm Village Capital ran a U.S. food and agriculture accelerator last year. Almost 90% of the more than 100 startups that applied were headquartered outside the venture capital corridors of New York, San Francisco and Boston.

Agrifood tech

Though “innovative food” such as alternative meats has notched some big deals recently, most venture-backable opportunities exist outside of the category, which attracted 3% of all food tech capital last year.

Robb, for example, has invested in and joined the board of Apeel Sciences, a California company that makes a plant-derived coating to extend the shelf-life of produce. He’s also backed and joined the board of Colorado-based FoodMaven, a marketplace for buyers and sellers of over-supplied or imperfect food, and invested in Austin-based Cece’s Veggie Co., a maker of healthy food kits.

FoodMaven clinches $10 million to tackle food waste on farms

S2G Ventures, where Robb is an executive-in-residence, topped AgFunder’s list of most active food and agtech investors last year. The Chicago venture firm, which raised a second fund of $185 million in 2017, backs “entrepreneurs whose products and services meet the shifting demands for healthy and sustainable food,” according to its website. In March, S2G joined the $5 million round of superfood company Kuli Kuli.

Also on the list of most active food and agtech investors is New York-based New Crop Capital, an early stage investor in companies developing alternatives to conventional animal agriculture. Mumbai impact venture fund Omnivore, the one non-U.S. firm on the list, backs early-stage Indian agriculture and food startups with the goal of boosting the profitability and sustainability of smallholder farmers (see, “Omnivore raises $46 million in second fund for Indian agriculture”).

“We’re at an incredible place of change,” says Robb. “The idea that food matters is going mainstream.”

Pineapple Upside Down Cake

Posted by [email protected] on Comments comments (0)

Pineapple Upside Down Cake is one of my favorites. I’ve eaten it at potlucks, summer picnics and all kinds of get togethers. I’ve never made it though.  Until now of course.

It all just came together quickly. I actually had all the ingredients. By accident. I accidentally bought pineapple rings instead of chunks. We just happened to have half a jar of maraschino cherries in the fridge. With everything else on hand, we made it in a snap.

The part I was afraid of was the flip. I’ve had to flip things out of a pan before with disastrous results. I was so hoping that this would work. It came out beautifully and it was so pretty!  It was delicious and super duper moist. Maybe next time I’ll be the one bringing this to parties this summer!

Pineapple Upside Down Cake Recipe

3 tbsp. butter
1/2 cup light brown sugar, packed
9 slices canned pineapple in juice, drained
Maraschino cherries
1 1/2 cups flour
2 tsp. baking powder
1/4 tsp. salt
1/3 cup vegetable shortening
2/3 cup granulated sugar
1 large egg
3/4 tsp. vanilla
2/3 cup milk

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Put the butter in an 8 x 8 in square pan and set it over low heat to melt.  When melted, sprinkle the brown sugar over the butter.  Arrange the pineapple rings in a single layer on top of the sugar, making 3 rows. Place the maraschino cherries in the center of each of the pineapple rings.  Set aside.

Sift the flour, baking powder and salt.  Set aside.

Mix together the shortening, sugar, egg and vanilla.  Blend the flour mixture alternately with the milk. Stir until just combined.

Pour the batter carefully into the pineapple baking pan and bake for 40 minutes.  Test for if it’s done with a toothpick or see if it springs back when you press gently on it.  Run a knife around the edges of the pan and put a serving dish on top.  Flip the cake onto the serving dish.  Leave the pan inverted over the cake a several moments to allow the syrup to soak into the cake.

Tips on How to Transition Into Retirement

Posted by [email protected] on Comments comments (0)

(Editor’s note: This content is sponsored by Acts Retirement-Life Communities.)

After a long time spent in the workforce, retirement can feel like the great unknown. Unlimited expanses of free time sounds like heaven to some people. For others, all they see is a difficult transition period marked by stress, uncertainty and grief.

We talked to retirees from both sides of the fence: those who welcomed retirement with open arms and those who entered this new phase with skepticism and doubt. What did we find? With a little guidance and some insight, transitioning into retirement can be the smoothest change you ever make, no matter what you think about it at first.

7 Tips for Making the Move into Retirement

Here’s what we managed to glean from the experiences of retirees who, just like you, were facing the major shift of transitioning out of their careers. Read these tips and hopefully you can smooth out some of the bumps on the road to retirement.

1. Plan for a longer transition period than expected
Few people ease into retirement without a few ups and downs. You’ve never done this before, so there’s not much of a blueprint to follow. Everybody has their own formula for taking the unstructured hours of retirement and creating new routines from scratch.

Inevitably there’s going to be some trial and error until you get this just right. There will be confusion. There will be disruption. What may these experiences include? Unstructured time, a change in daily routines, the ability to see friends and family but the uncertainty of how to go about it, the temptation to be a couch potato, an unsettling feeling that you should be doing something and more. But the journey will be well worth it as you settle into your new roles.

It could take months or it could take a few years for you to finally feel comfortable in your new skin. It’s completely natural and understandable for this transition to take a long time. After all, you were involved in the world of work for decades and those habits won’t melt away instantly. You may not have a morning commute anymore, or sit at a desk for eight hours, but that doesn’t mean your life has completely changed. Your hobbies, interests and passions are all still there. Embrace them! Instead of commuting to an office, commute to your workbench or to a class at the local community college. Embrace the change while diving into what makes you unique.

2. Give yourself a breather
Before you attempt to pin down new routines and settle into a new schedule befitting the retirement lifestyle you envision, take a moment to breathe. In fact, take a week or two to relax before you jump into your new routines.

By taking a mini-vacation first, you’ll be better prepared to approach your new life with a clear mind that’s well-rested and ready for the challenge. The way a honeymoon marks the transition from single life into marriage, this pre-retirement breather period marks another (equally) important transition in your life.

3. Prime your brain to see this as a new beginning
Rather than seeing retirement as the end of your career, view it as the beginning of an exciting new phase in your life. The best way to do that is to think like a researcher and do your homework. Here’s how:

• Read articles that cover retirement lifestyle topics
• Visit websites that cover retirement
• Talk to people who are already retired
• Register for classes in your area that can teach you new skills or start you on new hobbies you’ve always wanted to pursue
• Find out about volunteering opportunities
• Find out about clubs you can join
• Attend workshops to learn new things and meet new people

People live much longer than they used to. That means retirement is longer, too. Make the most it by finding a new purpose, setting new goals and generally broadening your horizons in every way you can imagine possible. There’s so much more opportunity out there these days for older Americans. It’s just a matter of doing your homework and finding out which activities will appeal to you during this new beginning.

4. Work on getting fit
During any stressful period in your life, it helps to get some exercise. This not only reduces the stress in your mind but makes your body feel better, too. Taking a morning walk or attending a fitness class at the local recreation center are just some of the ways you can work on getting fit. Look for senior yoga classes, water aerobics or gardening clubs, too. Each represents a different way of keeping your body healthy and fit, and all are great ways to ease the stress of beginning a new life.

And who knows — your gym appointments might become part of your new regular routine. Yoga can be wonderfully satisfying, and you may not want to give it up once your transition is complete. Click here to read why many older adults are trying (and loving) yoga.

This is a great time to focus on your health by getting or staying fit. Please consult your doctor first, however, and get their clearance for starting any new physical activity.

5. Maintain friendships
Your life is about to be upended by your oncoming retirement. You can keep one thing constant to ease the stress, however, and that’s your social network.

Spending time with good friends reduces stress and gives you the support you need to enter retirement with confidence. If you’re short on friends because you’ve lost your social network at work, join groups or classes. Shared interests make good friendships, so choose a class or group that’s centered around doing things you love.

Socializing helps people to live happy as well as healthy lives. Click here to read about the physical and mental benefits of socialization.

6. Build a strong mental foundation for change
Psychologically, you’re about to tackle one of life’s biggest challenges. It pays to prepare your mind with all the necessary tools for well-being. They are:

1. A strong identity. When you were working or raising children, you may have identified strongly with your job title. “I’m a manager” or “I’m Brittany’s mother.” Now, those labels don’t quite describe your new life, so you’ll need to come up with a new identity. Try “world traveler” or “super grandparent” or “writer of memoirs.” If none of these fit, don’t worry: Over time, as you explore and take on new roles and build new routines, your new identity will emerge.

2. A strong social network. We covered this in tip no. 5, but we’ll add to it that you need family as part of your social network, too. Plus, many people find that replacing the social network they had at work helps. If you volunteer, you may find yourself with a welcome new set of “work” friends.

3. A strong mission. Everyone needs a sense of purpose, no matter where they find themselves in life. One of the biggest fears people have about retirement is that they’ll lose the feeling of being useful. Figure out your mission, whether it’s helping look after grandkids or mentoring local teens on their career paths. Some find that learning a new language or hitting their list of must-see travel destinations around the world make wonderful missions, too!

7. Remember to chase your dreams
Retirement isn’t an end. It can be the beginning of something ripe with opportunity for fulfilling your dreams. Whether you dream big or dream small, the best way to ease yourself through the transition to retirement is to always remember to chase those dreams.

You don’t have to completely reinvent yourself to be happy, but you do get to get out there and rediscover the world through a new lens. If you happen to discover a new you in the process, all the better!

Ask a Queer Chick: My Girlfriend’s Ex-Girlfriend’s Ghost Won’t Get out of My House

Posted by [email protected] on Comments comments (0)

Happy almost-Halloween, friends! This is my favorite season of the year. It is also definitely among the queerest of celebrations, combining as it does two things we tend to love: getting dressed up, and summoning unholy forces of darkness to bathe this broken world in blood and tears. And also, candy. A friend asked me recently if I ever make up questions for this column, and I told her “never,” but I have to confess that in the spirit of the holiday I did sneak in one fictional query for this month. See if you can guess which one it is.

I’m a 33-year-old closeted lesbian. I grew up in a conservative, Christian household where being gay was a sin. I live at home, in a conservative city in the South where there’s no LGBTQ community, because I’m a caregiver for my grandma. My parents still say hurtful things about gay people. It sucks. I don’t have any friends or a social life. I’ve never had a date, ever, in my entire life. I’m incredibly lonely. I’m embarrassed for being a virgin at my age. I’ve tried online dating; I joined lesbian forums and queer sites hoping to meet someone, but I’ve had no luck. Women on these sites haven’t exactly been warm and caring. On one instance I was told because I’m in my 30s, still closeted, unemployed, and living at home, I should just forget about finding a girlfriend or getting married. I was also told because I’m allergic to both cats and dogs I should know I’m going to die a virgin. I know I shouldn’t take their comments to heart, but it hurt me. I’m starting to wonder if I should just give up and forget about finding a girlfriend (or even one date!) and about belonging to the lesbian community.

It was shitty of the people you encountered to say those things, and I’m pissed at them on your behalf. Even if you’re not interested in someone, there’s never a good reason to be cruel. Living at home isn’t inherently a deal breaker, and neither is being closeted or allergic to animals. What I get from your letter, however, is that you’re profoundly unhappy with your life—and apart from trying to meet women, you’re not doing much to change it.

I’m sorry to say this when it sounds like you’ve pinned your hopes of happiness on finding a partner, but “Hi, I’m miserable! Let’s date” is always going to be a hard sell. A girlfriend’s job is not to rescue you from your disappointments or wallow in them with you. Yes, a good relationship can make your life better, but it’s not magic—it takes time, work, compromise, and communication. As tempting as romantic fantasies about love transforming your life might be, the truth is that the more you work on transforming your life, the more likely you are to find someone to share it with.

What, aside from getting laid, would make you happy? Do you need a new job, a new hobby, a creative outlet, a therapist? (You could probably use a therapist. So could everyone!) What are your grandmother’s options besides having you as a full-time caregiver? What kind of work would you be interested in doing? Bear in mind that even if you love caring for your grandmother, she is statistically unlikely to live forever, and it’s a good idea to have some sort of plan for that eventuality. What kind of employment would allow you to contribute to your grandmother’s care while living farther away? Where might you like to live? Do you have a degree, or are you interested in pursuing one? Take some time to really think about the answers to these and other questions.

Girlfriends are awesome, and I hope you find one someday, but they’re not the only source of joy or meaning in the world. You need to do the harder work of figuring out who you are and what you want as an individual with needs distinct from your family, and then building a life in which you feel pride and self-esteem. Chicks totally dig that.

I know it’s pretty standard for queer women to remain friends with their exes, and I swear I’m not the jealous type, but my girlfriend’s college girlfriend died under mysterious circumstances and she’s still haunting OUR house ten years later. I’ve tried to be polite, express my needs—even bring in exorcists—but I’m just not comfortable with how much time they still spend together. My girlfriend has admitted that she doesn’t tell me every time she sees her ex in dreams, begging her to help solve her murder, because I get insecure. We’ve talked about moving, but my gf doesn’t want to be “one of those women who abandons her friends whenever she’s in a couple.” Am I crazy or does it sound like there are still feelings there?

Oh, the Dreaded Ex-Turned-Bestie, an entire genre of lesbian horror in her own right. If you’re obsessing over the time your significant other spends with a friend, it’s probably a sign that things aren’t going great in your own relationship. Ask yourself honestly: If it weren’t for all the spectral figures screaming in the middle of the night, would you be perfectly happy? Or are there issues that go deeper—disagreements about trust, intimacy, the thumping noise in the attic that no one else can hear?

It’s normal for your girlfriend to have friends and interests outside of your relationship, but if you feel neglected, it could mean something greater is amiss. One possibility is that you’re overly dependent on her. Do you have friends and interests and paranormal companions of your own? How do you pass the time while she’s communing with the deceased? It’s not realistic to expect your girlfriend to spend every waking, dreaming, or sleepwalking moment with you.

On the other hand, it could be that her sojourns with the other side really are consuming an untenable amount of her time, and perhaps her immortal soul. If you only see each other in passing; if all she ever says to you is “Is it raining?” or “REDRUM”; if you barely recognize her even when she’s not staring with the sightless eyes of one possessed by the dead, then the problem is that she’s not investing in your connection. Whether that’s because she’s spending all her energy searching for her ex’s mouldering corpse, or for some other reason, is somewhat beside the point. Relationships can’t survive without both parties participating, just like your girlfriend’s former flame couldn’t survive without her skull.

Yes, you and your girlfriend and an experienced medium need to establish boundaries with her ex. But before you can do that, the two of you need to be on the same page about what those boundaries should be. If your idea of happiness is spending tons of time together, and hers is digging up shallow graves with her bare hands by the light of the moon, you may simply be incompatible. Sometimes things don’t work out, and neither you, she, nor the whispering voices under the bed are to blame.

This very sweet and lovely person just admitted they have a crush on me, which I do not reciprocate. I’m not concerned they’re going to do anything drastic when I tell them I’m not into them, but I would really like them to know that I’m flattered and delighted without giving them false hope that I might come around. Please advise.

You must resist the urge to soften the blow, even in the hopes of salvaging your friendship. People, and especially women (you didn’t mention your gender, but most of my questions come from women), are socially conditioned to make bad news palatable. Don’t makes excuses like “I’m not ready to get involved,” or “I’m too busy,” when the truth is that you just don’t feel the same way. Be as direct as possible, even though it will feel brutal to say, “I enjoy your company but I’m not interested in getting sexually or romantically involved.” And recognize that, depending on the intensity of their attraction, this may mean they need to step back from the friendship until and unless it passes. You may not want your friendship to change, but for them, it already has—and limiting contact while they work through their disappointment may be a necessary form of self-care.

I come from a very traditional family of flesh-eating monsters. Since my human form is a woman of almost otherworldly beauty, my parents (and I) always just assumed that I would go out into the world and bewitch men with my charms, seducing them into a whirlwind romance before bringing them home to meet my family, who would ritualistically devour their bodies and souls. Thing is, I’m more and more sure I have an appetite for women as well. Should I say something to my family? Should I just show up with a female victim and let them figure it out for themselves? Or should I keep playing the part of the dutiful straight cannibalistic hell-spawn they all believe me to be?

One thing I believe with every (delicious) fiber of my being is that you shouldn’t come out by bringing a woman home to meet your family. If there’s even a slight chance your relatives will react poorly to the news that you’re a bisuccubus, it’s not fair to put your girlfriend in the middle of the confrontation. She’s going to feel like you’re throwing her to the wolves, even before she sees your relatives’ real teeth.

It’s OK to wait until you’re no longer dependent on your family and have established hunting grounds of your own before you share your truth with them. It’s also fine to tell them now, if you feel safe doing so. Many people and creatures you wouldn’t expect to be LGBTQ-affirming turn out to be surprisingly open when it comes to those they love. Talk things over with your family, and they may be more willing than you think to open their doors—and their cavernous, impossibly black void-maws—to whomever you bring home.

Whole Foods Is Selling Cauliflower Mac and Cheese, and It's the Only Thing on My Grocery List

Posted by [email protected] on Comments comments (0)

If you spend a day hanging out and eating with me, you'll quickly realize that I want all the flavor, which oftentimes means I'm not reaching for healthier alternatives to classics like mashed potatoes, pasta, and macaroni and cheese.

The other day I was doing some much-needed grocery shopping at Whole Foods when I came across the Ark Foods Classic Cheddar Cauli Mac and Cheese ($5). It's safe to say that there's a cauliflower alternative for all the best foods — such as the infamous cauliflower pizza crust, which I love — and I figured this play on mac and cheese wouldn't be bad.

Since I've been slacking on cooking lately, Ark Food's Cauli Mac and Cheese came into my life (so dramatic) at the right time. Each package is one serving and has 140 calories, 3.5 grams of fat, 16 grams of carbs, and seven grams of protein. Plus, it takes all of four steps to make: peel back the film, remove the cheese sauce packet, cook in the microwave for three to four minutes, and add sauce. Bottom line: I spent less time stressing about what to eat and more time catching up on my favorite shows like The Real Housewives of Atlanta.

I knew the mac and cheese would either taste really good or really bad, and I'm happy to report that it was delicious. I've had various substitutes for cheese, but let me tell you, the vegan cheddar sauce (made from cashews) was bomb. Translation: it was really good!

If you've been drooling the entire time while reading this, here's what you need to do. Get dressed, go to your nearest Whole Foods, and stock up. Look for it in the refrigerated section where the produce is; it should be where the prewashed lettuce and veggie noodles are kept. I recommend eating it alone as a snack or having it as a side. Plant-based, vegan, or not, you're going to be hooked.

Question about OMAD

Posted by [email protected] on Comments comments (0)

I have been doing Keto OMAD since two weeks ago, however, sometimes it is very hard for me to eat the full meal, therefore, I feel like I am not reaching my protein goals. (Got good results losing about 5 pounds of fat, and mantaining all my lean muscle mass, but I want to increase it)

Do you guys wait a little bit until you can eat again or you just eat until you are full? Or do you have some trick that makes eating easier?

72-year-old Cher reveals her fitness routine (squats are involved)

Posted by [email protected] on Comments comments (0)
Cher is a freakin' force of nature. At 72 years old, she just starred in Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again and will soon embark on a jam-packed North American tour to promote the ABBA tribute film. Oh, but before that, she's banging out a quick residency in Las Vegas, performing in the City of Sin every few nights throughout November. Pretty darn impressive, right?
